Sat 17 Aug 2002
The annual "Meet and Greet" Party and BBQ was held this evening. A large gathering obviously has enjoyed the occasion, since many are still there as I write this report.
It was a warm day, quite hot in the afternoon, but without yesterday's humidity. The wind was variable - in some relays, it was described as diabolical, in other others it was much more benign.
The third range of the 223/556 Championship was fired at 500 yards in the morning. After this, Stan Frost with 221v19 retains his lead over Gary Bowman 217.19 and Leo Cebula, Northville MI, USA, 217.16. In the F Class, Jim Thompson has 252 (223v29) leading Richard Willander 249 (221v28).
The final two ranges of the Long Range Challenge were fired today. The results still show a discrepancy, in that John Brewer has more points (364v43) than are supposedly possible (300). JJ Conway has the high score below 300, with 294.26. Top TR shooter is Ken Westling with 279v17, narrowly defeating Gerard Decosta, NH USA, at 278v14. We will try to resolve the discrepancy and report the final result tomorrow.
Two 'warm-up' TR/F events were fired today, the Gooderham and the Army and Navy Veterans.
In the Gooderham, 15 shots at 500 yards and 10 at 900 metres, Alain Marion, Hull QC, Canada, was the outright winner with 125v12. Second was Barry Langille, New Glasgow NS, Canada, with 125v4, and third was Jeremy Langley, Great Britain Rifle Team, 124v15. In the F Class, Larry Batholome, El Paso TX, USA, had 147, beating out James McAllister, London UK, and Philip Blakely, Esperance Australia, both on 145.
The Army and Navy Veterans was fired in the afternoon in quite erratic wind conditions. Dan Simpson, NH USA, Captain of this year's US TR Team, won the match with 73v9. Ken Westling and Clement Rousseau, Levis QC, Canada, each scored 73.5. Robert Crone, S Boston VA, USA, and William Hallam, Australia, topped the list in the F Class with 87.
The weather forecast is for showers overnight, clearing in later the morning. After this, it seems that there might be two or three days of quite settled weather.
The last of the 'warm-ups', the Tilton, at 300 metres and 600 yards, will be fired in the morning. The Macdonald Stewart Grant Aggregate gets underway in the afternoon, with the MacDougall at 300 metres and 500 yards.
Black Powder also finishes tomorrow with the International Team Match at 700, 800 and 900 metres. I hope to have a summary of all Black Powder scores for you tomorrow. There should also be some details of the Historical Military Rifle Match.
