Sun 18 Aug 2002
There was a strong westerly breeze all day, with gusts requiring significant sight changes. The morning was hot and humid, but these conditions improved during the day and it's a lot cooler this evening. The wind did not drop until most shooting was over.
In the morning we fired the Tilton, the last of the 'warm-ups', at 300 metres and 600 yards. This resulted in a tie between J.J. Jackson, Keller TX, USA, and Ed Bergsma, Surrey BC, Canada. Both scored 100v14. JJ Jackson won the tie shoot held this evening. There were three scores of 100v12, all from Canadians - David Paetkau, Winnipeg MB, Vladimir Kozicki, Ottawa ON, and Darren Dobbin, Royal Canadian Army Cadets. In the F Class, Heinz Henke, BDMP, Germany, and Robert Crone, S Boston VA, USA, both scored 119. That tie is to be decided. JJ Conway and Peter Jackson, Scotland, had 118.
The Champlain Aggregate of all the 'warm-ups' was concluded with the Tilton. Ken Westling, Vancouver BC, Canada, won this with 369v32, from Scott Murray, Arnprior ON, Canada, 366v34 and Mitchell Maxberry, Karori, New Zealand, 365.37. Robert Crone won the F Class with 434, from William Hallam, Australia, 431 and Philip Blakely, Esperance, Australia, 429.
The Macdonald Stewart Grand Aggregate got underway in the afternoon with the MacDougall. Raymond Gross, Midland MI, USA, won this match with 100v13, ahead of Scott Murray, 100v11, and John Webster, Great Britain Rifle Team, 100v10. For the second year in a row, Wolfgang Scholze, BDMP Germany, won the F Class with 119 from Keith Cunningham, Burnt River ON, Canada, and Andrew Larkin, Australia, and John Bridger, Surrey, UK, both with 117.
The mystery of John Brewer's extra points has now been resolved, so the final result of the Long Range Challenge has Emil Praslick, Columbus GA, USA, winning with 281v13, from Ken Westling, 279v17, and Gerard Decosta, NH, USA, 278v14. Robert Crone won the F Class with 327, from John Brewer 325, and JJ Conway 320.
Tomorrow we have two matches - the Norman Beckett at 300 and 800 metres, and the John Brick at 500 and 600 yards. The fourth range of the 223/556 Championship will also be fired, as well as the new F Class Coaches Match.
