Wed 21 Aug 2002
We awoke to a cool, clear morning. During the day, it clouded over and became a lot warmer and more humid. The winds, as a result, were also more fickle - especially in late morning and early afternoon. This evening, we've been to a reception hosted by the Great Britain National and Under 25 Teams. It was a jovial affair, in the 'tent', from which your faithful scribe has now returned to duty.
The main event today was the President's Match, which is also the second part of qualification for the Governor General's Final on Saturday. The first (800 metre) range of the Gibson was also fired this afternoon.
In the President's, there is an outright winner, John Hoham, Fort Wayne IN, USA, with 150v24. David Luckman, GBRT, with 150v22, and Alain Marion, Hull QC, Canada, 150v19, were close behind. There were nine scores of 150 in all. The F Class perfect score was 180, and Keith Cunningham, Burnt River ON, Canada, made it. Larry Barthelome, El Paso TX, USA, had 179, and there were three scores of 177.
The top 50 TR shooters in the total of scores in the Letson and President's qualify for the Governor General's Final on Saturday. The leaders going into the Final are David Luckman, GBRT, 255v37, and Charles Bayne, Wolfville NS, Canada, 255v35. In 50th place is Audrey Gagne, Connaught Cadet Training Staff, with 250v19.
In F Class, 10 shooters similarly qualify. The leader is Robert Crone, S Boston VA, USA, with 301, followed by Keith Cunningham, Burnt River ON, Canada, 299. 10th place qualifier is Clifford Talbot, Fallon NV, USA, with 295.
The 223/556 Championship was concluded with 15 shots at 900 metres. At this hour of the night, no scores have been given to me. However, from handshakes on the range, we understand that Gary Bowman has won the TR match and Jim Thompson the F Class. More tomorrow.
The two major, continuing aggregates are the Macdonald Stewart Grand and the Bisley. In the latter, which is for Canadians only and is used for the purpose of overseas teams selection, tonight's leader is Charles Bayne with 646v57. Second and third are Alain Marion and Scott Murray with 645v76 and 645v67 respectively. This year, there is an F Class Bisley Aggregate, of which Keith Cunningham is the leader with 768.
In the Grand, the same three Canadians lead the pack, in spite of the huge foreign competition. Second to Keith Cunningham in the F Class is Robert Crone, S. Boston VA, USA, with 764. The next couple of days, which are quite substantially at the longer ranges, will settle a number of scores.
