Report for Thursday 21st August This was a very hot and humid day, with, mercifully a wind to make it a bit more bearable. Although it was sunny, the sky had that darker, steely hazy hue that often precedes more unsettled weather, and the Gatineau Hills across the river were barely visible. In morning, the last two ranges of the Gibson were fired at 300 metres and 600 yards, adding to yesterdays 800 metres. The outright TR winner is R.I. Nelson of the British Cadet Rifle Team (The Athelings) with 150.18, followed by two scores of 150.12, Andy Kolenko, Agincourt, Ontario, and Peter Westlake, Connaught Cadet Staff. First place in the F Class was taken by Wolfgang Scholze of the BDMP with 177, from Leo DAmour 176, Dave Rumbold and Hartmut Krueger, BDMP, both on 175. With the Gibson, we have now completed the short range (to 600 yards) events in the Grand and other major aggregates. Several aggregates were completed today the scores for which are shown in the links below. I will just say that the TR and F Class winners were, respectively: in the All-Comers (300m 600y), Alain Marion 603.76 and Wolfgang Scholze 715; in the Short Range ( 300m only), Ron Surette, Connaught Cadet Staff, 235.34, and John Brewer, Mississippi, 280; and in the Maple Leaf (500 and 600 yards only), Keith Cunningham 369.34 and Dave Rumbold 437. There are just 75 points (15 shots) to be fired in the Grand Aggregate, in the Gatineau at 900 metres on Friday morning. The current leader is Pat Vamplew with 748.85, from Alain Marion 747.89, Des Vamplew 745.83, and Keith Cunningham 744.69. If conditions are unsettled, and they may well be, the race is still wide open. In F Class, John Brewer has 886, Wolfgang Scholze 885 and Dave Rumbold 878. In the afternoon several team matches were fired. Unfortunately, the Outlander could not be held, since there were no other overseas teams to challenge the USA. The long range Inter-Provincial Match, the London Merchants, was won by British Columbia by 2 points over Ontario. At this time of the night, I do not have the results of the Provincial (short range) or of the Michael Faraday between the British and Canadian Cadets. Finally, this afternoon, there were fired two non-aggregate individual matches. The Street, following the Palma course of fire with15 shots at each of 700, 800 and 900 metres, was won by Terry Glenn, Auburn NY, USA, with 219.14, from Guenter Boehme, BDMP, 217.20, and Brian Slink, Baldwinsville NY, USA, 214.17. In the F class, Heinz Vollenweider, Richmond Hill, Ontario, won with 247, from William Hammers, Michigan, USA, 246, and Adriaan De Jong, BDMP, 244. Conditions were by no means easy, with a wind varying in strength and direction (for example, 4 to 11 minutes left at 800 metres). I stress the left, since a senior member of the DCRA put on something like the correct wind, but right rather than left, to start a rather tortuous shoot at 700 metres. Then there was the Rideau, 20 shots at 900 metres, won by Adam Samansky, Massachusetts, USA, with 96.5, Brian Slink was 2nd with 95.5 and Scott Fulmer, Liverpool NY, USA, 3rd with 93.5. In F Class, Wolfgang Scholze had 107, Jim Thomps on 105, and Hartmut Krueger 104. This evening is generally when Provincial dinners are held. Ive just got back from Ontarios, and am feeling quite replete after prime rib and some good red wine. There was a chuckle to pass on to you, which has already slipped my memory. Perhaps it may resurface tomorrow. The forecast is for possible showers overnight and in the morning, followed by two sunny and much cooler days. The week should finish in fine style.
