Report for Friday 22nd August I write these notes having just returned from the Macdonald Stewart Dinner at the Chateau Laurier. This, as always, was a very pleasant affair, an evening in civilisation after the more Spartan existence at the ranges. The Dinner is primarily to honour the winner of the Grand Aggregate who, for no less than for the 10th time, was Alain Marion. This is another remarkable achievement in Alains remarkable shooting career. There will be some more comments as to how he did it below. The winner of the Walter M. Stewart Memorial Prize for the top Canadian Under 25 shooter was Laurie Hearn, a cadet from this years Cadet Bisley Team. When I left the DCRA Office last night after writing yesterdays report, it was pouring with rain. That, along with some thunder and lightning, went of for a couple of hours. The morning came with somewhat threatening skies and a brisk, blustery breeze. By mid-morning, the skies had cleared to give us a very fine day. However, the wind continued to be quite lively during all shooting periods. In the morning, we fired the Gatineau at 900 metres. The afore-stated wind caused many people, including your faithful scribe, a great deal of trouble. The first relay was perhaps the least difficult from then on conditions were variously diabolical or impossible. The scores showed it. The Gatineua was won by Brandon Dean, from Newfoundland with the Connaught Cadets, with 73.5, followed by R. Holtum of the Athelings, 72.6, and Gregory Peters, RCAC Bisley Cadets, 72.5. The better known shooters were in later relays, with many of their names coming much further down the list. In F Class, Leo DAmour had 85, William Hammers 83 and Hartmut Krueger 82. The Gatineau was the last range of the Grand Aggregate. As mentioned above, Alain Marion overtook yesterdays leaders to finish first with 814.93. Jim Paton was second with 812.95, and Pat Vamplew third with 812.86. John Brewer won the new Crone Trophy for the top in the F Class with 967, from Wolfgang Scholze 966, with Leo DAmour and Dave Rumbold both on 958. John Tetlow 921 overtook Jim Thompson 919 to win the Farquharson Trophy for top F(F) shooter. Jim had had a miserable time in the Gatineau! Immediately after the Gatineau was fired the Patrons Match at 900 metres. Peter Church, Michigan USA, with 72.8, was the outright winner from Bob Jones, Arizona USA, 71.6, and Laurie Hearn 71.1. Wolfgang Scholze won the F Class with 86, from Dave Rumbold 83 and John Brewer 78. The wind conditions were again very difficult. Several aggregates were also completed with the firing of the Gatineau and Patrons, most notably the Gzowski Long Range and the Polar Bear Aggregates. Andy Kolenko won the Gzowski with 216.14, from Patricia Dahlstrom 215.20 and Jim Paton 215.17. John Brewer won the F class with 253, from Wolfgang Scholze 251 and Leo DAmour 249. The winner of the Polar Bear Aggregate was Keith Cunningham 650.56, from Jim Paton 648.68, and Alain Marion 648.66. Top of the F Class was Wolfgang Scholze 773, from Dave Rumbold 766, and John Brewer 765. Top F(F) shooter was Jim Thompson with 724. In the afternoon, the Commonwealth, Under-25, Algonquin and Lum Trophy Team Matches were fired. I do not have details of these except for the Lum. Here Canadas Old Fs beat the USA F Team but the narrowest of margins one point 420 to 419. Good fun for all and both Colin Brown for Canada and Alan Warner for the USA managed to get some noise out that bugle (the one that Charles Young donated and which is said to have sounded the advance for the Charge of the Light Brigade, and to have caused the collapse of the Walls of Jericho). The Hayhurst individual match was also fired in the afternoon at 300, 500 and 600 yards. The winner was Roch Croteau, ACLIM Cadet from Quebec, 146.12, from Clint Dahlstrom, Victoria BC, 146.10, amd Scott Gilbert, ACF UK Cadets, 144.10. Heinz Vollenweider, Richmond Hill, Ontario, had 164 in the F Class. The Hayhurst concluded the Cadet Bisley Aggregate for ACLIM Cadets, with Chantel Boake from Nova Scotia, winning with 731.54, Maxime Durand from Quebec 723.54, and Gregory Perron, from BC 720.63. There are many other aggregates, too numerous to mention here, which can be found in the links below this report. Tomorrow seems set fair, with a forecast of clear skies and much cooler temperatures. The wind is predicted to be fresh which should produce good but testing conditions for the team matches in the morning and the Governor Generals Final in the afternoon.
