Tue 17 Aug 2004
No mist this morning. The day was fairly sultry, with a very light breeze in the morning. The wind picked up in the afternoon, just in time for the Alexander of Tunis at 900 metres. Several relays reported wind varying between 10 and 15 minutes. My own experience, a little later in the afternoon, was between 6 and 9 minutes. Since at the same time, the 600 yard range of the Letson was being fired, this made it too quite a challenge. However, scores in the Letson were very high as you will note below. In the Letson, to the winner of which is awarded a DCRA Life Membership, made possible by a bequest for the late Major-General Harry Letson, the winner was David Luckman, GBRT, with 105.17 (HPS 105.21). Des Vamplew, Toronto, Ontario, was second with 105.16, followed by David Brantner, Keyser, WV, 105.13. All in all, there were 16 scores of 105, with a further 32 of 104. In the F Class, there are three scores of 122 (HPS 126), requiring a tie shoot between Dave Rumbold, Ottawa, Ontario, William Hammers, West Bloomfield, MI, and Wolfgang Scholze, BDMP, Germany. The Letson is the first part of the qualifying stage for the Governor General's Final. Qualifying will be completed with the President's Match tomorrow. Also fired today was that notorious aggregate buster, The Alexander of Tunis, 10 shots at 900 metres. As I mentioned above, the conditions were quite challenging. None the less, there were 7 scores of 50, with John Webster, GBRT, and Geoff Woodman, New Harbour, Newfoundland, tied for first place with 50.5. Dave Rumbold won the F class with 55 (HPS 60), from Emil Praslick, Brewster, NY, and Wolfgang Scholze. The new Jack Gorrie Tuesday Aggregate, created in memory of the late Professor Jack Gorrie, who pioneered the application of computer squadding and scoring, working on this with the DCRA for over 25 years, was won by David Luckman, 154.23 (HPS 155. 31), from John Webster, 154.20, and Roger Mullin, Cobourg, Ontario, 154.13. Dave Rumbold won the F Class with 177 (HPS 186), from Wolfgang Scholze and William Hammers, both on 176. Today's events saw the completion of the Klondike "Half Way" Aggregate, which thus also shows the current standings in the Grand Aggregate: David Luckman, 454.64; John Webster, 453.58; David Calvert, GBRT, 452.62; James Paton, White Rock, BC, 452.60; Andy Luckman, GBRT, 451.47; Linda Miller, Burnt River, Ontario, 451.47. The score of 25th place is 448.43. There is still a long way to go and, with unsettled weather forecast over the next few days, anything may happen. In F Class we have: Dave Rumbold, 528; Wolfgang Scholze, 525; William Hammers and Emil Praslick, 520; and Leo D'Amour, Laval, Quebec, 516. Top F(F) is Jim Thompson, Whitevale, Ontario, 503. Also fired today was the Coached Pairs Team Match, but I have no scores as yet. Had some more of the good Chilean Cabernet Savignon tonight to wash down the steaks. Tomorrow, we will fire the President's, the second part of qualifying for the Governor General's, and the first range of the Gibson. The weather forecast is a little uncertain, with rain likely and possibly some stronger winds. We can only hope that, once again, the forecasters are wrong!
