Mon 16 Aug 2004

At 6:30 am this morning (Monday), the sun was just up and the sky was clear. By 7:15 am, a thick ground mist had produced very limited visibility - certainly no targets were visible from 300 metres or more. It took a little while for the sun to burn this off, so that everything ran late by about 40 minutes all day. An irritation rather than a disaster, thanks to the patience and good sense of competitors and staff. Generally, it was then a sunny, quite humid day. The wind was light, with small and insidious variations. Again, we were fortunate to escape the "40% probability of thunder showers in the afternon". May the weather forecasters keep up their record of inaccuracy for the rest of the week! Two matches were fired today. The Norman Beckett, named in memory of one of Canada's finest shooters, winner of the Queen's Prize in 1961, fired at 300 and 800 metres, was won by Nigel Ball, GBRT, with 100.17, from James Paton, White Rock, BC, 100.15, and T.W. Hunter, British Cadet Rifle Team, 100.15. There were 22 scores of 100. The F Class was won by Leo D'Amour, Laval, Quebec, 119, from Dave Rumbold, Ottawa, Ontario, 118, and William Hammers, West Bloomfield, Michigan, 117. The Colonel John Brick, in memory of this former Executive Vice President and member of the Canadian Forces Sports Hall of Fame, fired at 500 and 600 yards, was won by Bryan Kaufman, New Dundee, Ontario, with 10.17, from John Webster, Captain of the GBRT, 100.16, and Bert Rollins, Fairfax, Vermont, 100.15. There were 17 scores of 100. There is a tie to be shot off in the F Class between John Ingoldsby, Caledon East, Ontario, and Dave Rumbold with 117. The day's aggregate, newly named as the Dick Hampton Aggregate, in memory of our distinguished Queen's Prize winner in 1966, member of the Canadian Forces Sprots Hall of Fame, and former Executive Vice President, was won by David Luckman, GBRT, 200.28, from Jon Underwood, GBRT, 200.26, and Des Vamplew, Toronto, ontario, 200.25. The F Class winner was Dave Rumbold, 235, from Emil Praslick, Brewster, New York, 232 and William Hammers, 230. Mrs. Veronica Hampton has presented two perpetual trophies for the TR and F Class winners of the Hampton Aggregate. Settled this evening was the tie for the Army and Navy Veterans, Serge Bissonnette, Orleans, Ontario, defeating Des Vamplew. We now have 300 points towards the Macdonald Stewart Grand Aggregate. There are three tied with the HPS of 300, David Luckman, 300.41, Jon Underwood, 300.40, and Des Vamplew 300.38. There are seven scores of 299 and seven of 298. There is a long way to go yet! The final range of the 223/556 Championship was fired at 900 metres this evening. Steve Urban, Fort Worth, Texas, scored a fine 75.10 at 900 and is this year's champion with 443.43. In second and third places, respectively were Clint Dahlstrom, Victoria, BC, 438.34, and Stan Frost, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, 437.38. Jim Thompson, Whitevale, Ontario, won the F Class with 501, Socially, it was a quiet evening. We had some excellent Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon to go with some equally excellent steaks. It is after such things that I come to write these reports. Peter Vaughan is doing a fine job in correcting my numerous typos and other errors. We agreed this morning that it is one of life's little miracles that these accounts make any sense or even get written at all!
