CFRC 2005, Day 2 This was a much better day, finishing off with the annual "Meet and Greet" and BBQ, attended by some 150 people. In spite of a Cadet Dinner having consumed all the wine in the Connaught mess supply, emergency measures were taken and a good time was had by all.

Your scribe is writing these notes under a certain handicap this evening.

The 40% chance of showers hardly hit the range, apart from a short period of drizzle in the morning. The rest of the day was overcast, with a good light for shooting, and a moderate but not overly variable breeze from the left.

The 223/5.56 Championship started off the morning with its 500 yard stage. The TR leaders are Dennis Flaharty, Irvine, CA, on 297.33, Stan Frost, Saskatoon, SK, 296.29, and Leo Cebula, USA, 294.27. Jim Thompson, Whitevale, ON, leads the F Class with 327. There are two ranges still to go: the 600 yards tomorrow and the final 900 metres on Monday.

The final ranges of the Long Range Challenge were fired in the afternoon. The Challenge consists of four shoots at our longest range (900 metres) over two days. The winner in the TR section was Emil Praslick III, Columbus, GA, at 295.27 (HPS 300), from Mitchell Maxberry, Wellington, New Zealand, 293.27, and Raymond Gross, Midland, MI, 292.19.

In the F Class, Jim Murphy, Owensbord, NY, was the winner on 351 (HPS 360), from Paul Crosbie, Scottish Team, 350, and four tied at 336.

Two Target Rifle - F Class 'Warm Up' Matches were fired today, the Gooderham and the Army & Navy Veterans.

In the Gooderham, 15 shots at 500 yards and 10 at 900 metres (HPS 125), the TR winner is Geoff Woodman, New Harbour, NF, with 125.19. Pat Vamplew, Whitby, ON, was second with 125.17, and Edward Jeens of the Welsh Team, third with 125.16.

There is a three-way tie in the F Class with scores of 148 (HPS 150), between Paul Crosbie, John Brewer, Canton, OH, and Jim Murphy.

Things might have been a little different had not two senior DCRA Life Governors convinced each other that the 500 yards was a 10, not 15, shot match, scored 50.8 and 50.4, and then left the range! Being in each case 25 points short of the HPS left them with an insuperable handicap! They apparently were not the only ones to make this error!

The other match was the Army and Navy Veterans, 15 shots at 900 metres (HPS 75). Alain Marion, Hull, QC, and Adam Samansky, Andover, MA, are tied on 75.8, just ahead of Pat Vamplew, Whitby, ON, and Richard Jeens Wales, on 75.7.

In the F Class, Jim Murphy scored a perfect 90, to win over Wolfgang Scholze, BDMP Germany, 88, and four others on 87.

The forecast for tomorrow is for continued scattered showers, so if we are as lucky as today, all should be well.

There is one more 'warm-up' match, the Tilton, in the morning, and then the Grand Aggregate gets underway with the Macdougall in the afternoon.

The Black Powder concludes in the morning with the International Team Match, to be followed by the Historical Military Rifle event.
