Sun 21 Aug 2005
The Macdonald Stewart Grand Aggregate is now underway.
The firing of the Macdougall, 10 shots at 300 metres and 500 yards, this afternoon, marks the opening stage of the Grand Aggregate, which will conclude with the Gatineau Match on Friday.
As always, an extra bit of tension is attached to those first shots in the Grand. That tension was increased by the presence of a strong, blustery breeze from the left, varying in direction and strength. Some relays had quite testing conditions.
I might quote my own lamentable experience when, at 300 metres, firing with over 3 minutes of wind, itself a strange occurrence, I was comprehensively caught when the wind backed off - that two minute change presented me with a deserved but most unfortunate magpie.
Others shared a similar fate at both distances. But not all suffered in that way: Roger Mullin of Cobourg, Ontario, scored 100.10 too win the Macdougall and thus lead the Grand. He was followed by 10 scores of 99, headed by Dieter Grummt, BDMP Germany, 99.14, and Scott Murray Arnprior, Ontario , 99.13.
In the F Class, Jim Murphy, Owensbord, KY, has 118, just beating Vanessa Warner, Keene, NH, 117, and Dave Rumbold, Ottawa, and Paul Crosbie, Scottish Team, both on 116
The day was mostly sunny, with the above mentioned wind. The forecast showers did not happen, except for a 20 minute downpour just at the start of the day's shooting. Part of the first relay of the Tilton and those in the 223/5.56 600 yard range got a good soaking.
The Tilton, 10 shots at 300 metres and 600 yards, was won by Queen's Prize winner James Paton, White Rocks, BC, with 100.14. There were six other scores of 100, with David Brantner, Keyser, WV, 100.12, and Raymond Gross, Midland, MI, 100.11, leading the pack.
A tie shoot is required in the F Class between former World F class Champion Wolfgang Scholze, BDMP, Germany, and Jim Murhpy, who both had perfect scores of 120. Paul Crosbie was 3rd with 119.
The firing of the Tilton meant the end of the Champlain Aggregate, the total of the warm-up events on Saturday and Sunday.
Des Vamplew, Scarborough, Ontario, won this with 298.33 (HPS 300), from Geoff Woodman, New Harbour, NF, 297.37, and Richard Jeens, Welsh Team, 297.35. Jim Murphy won the F class with 358 (HPS 360), from Paul Crosbie, 354, and Wolfgang Scholze, 351.
In the 223/5.56 Championship, with one range to go at 900 metres on Monday, Stan Frost, Saskatoon, SK, now leads the TR shooters with 371.41 (HPS 375) from Dennis Flaharty, Irvine, CA, 370.41 and Leo Cebula, USA, 367.34. Jim Thompson is the top F Class shooter on 410.
The forecast for tomorrow still calls for the occasional shower.
Two more Grand Aggregate Matches will be fired: the Norman Beckett and the John Brick, as well as the final range of the 223/5.56 Championship.
This evening was one of business meetings, from which there were no momentous results. A quite drinkable bottle of Milyaroo Merlot helped the meetings pass fairly painlessly.
