Mon 22 Aug 2005
This might just be one of those evenings when I fall asleep over the keyboard! I've had a very nice dinner 'off camp', and now it's quite late and I have to try to wake up in time for an 8:00 a.m. start in the morning. Apart from a few drops of rain in the morning, it has been a fine day, with a fairly strong breeze which changed direction quite swiftly. In the afternoon especially, shooting at both 600 yards and 800 metres was quite a challenge.
My own experience at 800 metres, with wind varying from zero to about 8 left was probably not out of the ordinary. Under these conditions scoring was not that high, so that the shooters who made the HPS of 100 in the two matches are to be specially commended.
The Norman Beckett, 10 shots at 300 and 800 metres: the only 100 was scored by M.W. Latimer of the British Cadet Rifle Team, winning the match with 100.8. There were 11 99s, with Scott Murray, Arnprior, Ontario, and Emil Praslick III, Columbus, GA, on 99.12. Top F class was Dave Rumbold, Ottawa, Ontario, with 117, from Jim Murphy, Owensbord, KY, and John Wright of the Welsh Team, both on 116.
The John Brick, 10 shots at 500 and 600 yards: Patricia Dahlstrom, Victoria, BC, won the match with 100.13. James Paton, White Rocks, BC, was second on 100.12, with three scores of 100.11. There is a three way tie in the F class to be shot off between between Paul Crosbie, Scotland, John Brewer, Canton, MS, and Jim Murhpy, each with a score of 119.
The Monday Aggregate, named in memory of the late Dick Hampton, was won by Jim Paton with 198.24, from Scott Murray, 198.23, and John Marshall, New Glasgow, NS, 198.19. In the F Class, Jim Murphy had 235, with Dave Rumbold and Paul Crosbie both scoring 234.
300 points have now been contributed to the Grand Aggregate, with many more still to come. The leaders are Scott Murray 297.36, James Paton 297.31 and Raymond Gross, Midland, MI, 296.29. In the F class, Jim Murphy has 353, and Dave Rumbold and Paul Crosbie both have 350.
The final, 900 metre, range of the 223/5.56 Championship was fired this evening in quite difficult conditions. Dennis Flaharty, Irvine, CA, has won the 2005 Championship, with 442.47. Stan Frost, Saskatoon, SK, had 440.44, and Leo Cebula, USA, 436.38. The F Class was won by Jim Thompson, but his natural modesty forces him to say that he was the only F Class shooter to complete all six ranges -The weather sorted out the others!
Tomorrow should be a fine day for shooting, with little or no rain in the forecast.
The Letson Match is the first part of the qualifying stage of the Governor General's prize, and the 900 metres Alexander of Tunis is often a maker or breaker of Grand Aggregate hopes.
I'm still just awake, so, with great relief, I'll conclude these remarks.
