Tue 23 Aug 2005
This is a 'big' day in the DCRA Matches! The Letson Match is the first part of the Governor General's Qualifying Stage, the Alexander of Tunis at 900 metres is so often the aggregate maker/breaker, and we are now over half way through the Grand Aggregate.
It was a grand day for shooting - cool, no rain, partly cloudy, and with a brisk breeze from the north (front) varying in direction quite rapidly.
First of all, the Letson (7 shots at each of 300 metres, 500 and 600 yards, HPS 105 (F Class 126)): the winner was Emil Praslick III, Columbus, GA, with 105.14. Emil wins a DCRA Life Membership made possible by the bequest of the late Major General Harry Letson. There were 10 other scores of 105, with Paul Trembaly, Charlesbourg, QC, 105.13, and Allan Mabon, Scotland, 105.12, in the next two places.
In F Class, Paul Crosbie, Scotland, had an almost perfect 125, just ahead of Marius De Champlain, Point au Pere, QC, and Vanessa Warner, Keene, NH, on 124.
The Alexander of Tunis, named in recognition of a previous Governor General of Canada, was fired in pretty difficult conditions. My own experience with wind from 1 left to 6 right is probably not untypical! The outright winner was Jean-Claude Theriault, Quebec, QC, with 50.7, beating out Paul Tremblay, Charlesbourg, QC, 50.6, and Richard Lozier II, Bradford , ME, and Paul Thumschat, BDMP Germany, both on 50.5. Two other 50s were recorded. In F Class, John Brewer, Canton, MS, scored 58, with four scores of 57 close behind.
The Tuesday Aggregate, named in memory of the late Jack Gorrie, who for so many years looked after the squadding and scoring computer programmes for the DCRA, was won by Paul Tremblay with 155.19; in 2nd and 3rd places were James Paton, White Rocks, BC, 154.11 and Allan Mabon, 153.15. The F Class winner was Marious de Champlain with 181, from John Brewer, 179, and Dave Rumbold, 177.
Today's events conclude the Klondike "half way" Aggregate, with 455 points recorded for the Grand and 375 still to go.
Leaders, as of tonight, are: James Paton 451.42; Paul Tremblay 449.42 and Keith Cunningham, Burnt River, ON, 448.37.
In the F Class, Dave Rumbold and Jim Murphy are tied with 527, with John Brewer 526, close behind.
I now have a few results from earlier in the meeting, coming from the Cadet Matches held at the end of last week.
The Rex Goddard Team Match, between the British and Canadian Bisley Cadet Teams is fired in two stages - the first in the UK in July and the second in Canada:
Stage I, BCRT 770.57, RCAC 770.42;
Stage II, BCRT 816.61, RCAC 815.58;
Totals BCRT 1586. 118, RCAC 1585.100. It could hardly have been much closer!
The CanLoan Match, between Canadian and ACF (UK) Cadets seeking to qualify for their National and Bisley Teams:
RCAC 803.63,
ACF (UK) 783.45.
The DCRA Black Powder Matches were held over the weekend. Winner of the Grand Aggregate was Chris Jones, Ottawa, ON.
Tonight, I have been at the USA Team Dinner, at Zolas Restaurant, which some readers may recall with pleasure.
For tomorrow, the forecast is very good - partly cloudy and mild.
We will fire the President's Match, to complete the qualifying stages of the Governor General's , the first part of the Gibson, and the re-scheduled Ottawa Regiment.
A Celtic Party is likely to cause havoc in the evening.
