Wed 24 Aug 2005
Just in from the joint European Teams' party - hosted by Germany, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. A jovial affair, which still continues, judging by sounds of the pipes as I start these notes.
It was another great day for shooting: mild and sunny, with a variable breeze, which in some relays was described as diabolical! I shot in those conditions in the early afternoon at 600 yards, but those firing at 800 metres fared far worse. In the later afternoon, the wind dropped and. by the time of the re-scheduled Ottawa Regiment at 6 pm, it was nearly calm.
The main event fired today was the President's Match, 10 shots at 300 metres and 500 and 600 yards, which is the second part of the Qualifying Stage for the Governor General's Final on Saturday afternoon.
We also fired the first, 800 metre, range of the Gibson, a match that will be completed tomorrow morning.
The President's (HPS 150) was won by Des Vamplew, Scarborough, Ontario, with 150.24, from Peter Westlake, Innisfil, Ontario, 150.22, and Emil Praslick III, Columbus, GA, 150.21. There were two other scores of 150, including Des' brother Pat with 150.20. In the F Class (HPS 180), Jim Murphy, Owensbord, NY, had 179, with Bob Pastor, Gobles, MI, Wolfgang Scholze, BDMP Germany, and Jim Bell, Scotland, all on 178.
The Governor General's Qualifying Stage was won by Emil Praslick with 255.35, from Des Vamplew, 255.34, and James Paton, White Rocks, BC, 254.28. Barring any changes, the last scores of the 50 to qualify are 248.20, from Gary Henry, Zachary, LA, and Steven Spinney, Scarborough, Ontario. Only the score of the President's is carried forward into the Final. In the parallel F Class Qualifier, Paul Crosbie, Scotland, leads the 10 qualifiers with 300 (HPS 306), from Bob Pastor, John Brewer, Canton, MS, and Marius de Champlain, Pointe au Pere, QC, all on 298. The last to qualify was Vanessa Warner, Keene, NH, with 293. In both groups, the scores are very close which should produce two exciting Finals on Saturday.
The Gibson 800 metres range is part of the Grand Aggregate, in which 655 points have now been fired, with just 175 to go. Leading is James Paton, 649.65, from Paul Tremblay, Charlesbourg, QC, 647.63, and Emil Praslick III, 644.73. In the F Class (HPS 786), Jim Murphy has 765, John Brewer 761 and Dave Rumbold, Ottawa, Ontario, 760.
The Ottawa Regiment, which was rained out last Friday, was fired this evening at 800 metres in an almost flat calm. James Paton won the match with 75.12, from Alain Marion, Hull, QC, 75.11 and Richard Jeens, Wales, 75.11. There were 15 scores of 75 in all. In the F Class, John Brewer had 90, the HPS, Marius de Champlain 87, and Jim Murphy 86.
The 300 metre and 600 yard ranges of the Gibson will be fired tomorrow morning. In the afternoon, there are team matches for the Provinces and for visiting International Teams. The important match between the Canadian and British Cadets for the Michael Faraday Trophy will also be fired.
