DCRA Canadian Championships, Day 1
Thu 16 Aug 2007
Last year Day 1 was on Friday and we had rain; this year we moved it to
Thursday, as we still had rain. Around 10 AM, there was a heavy shower, which
gave shooters a good soaking, but which did not delay shooting. Then just at the
start of the afternoon, there was an even heavier thunderstorm, forcing a
cease-fire and driving everyone under cover for nearly an hour. We narrowly
missed another band of showers later in the afternoon. By the end of it all,
there was hardly a cloud in the sky, and even the brisk breeze that had caused
many difficulties earlier on had dropped to a more gentle whisper.
Four events were held during the day: the Sierra 300m ISSF Prone Match; the
223/556 Championship; the Long Range Challenge; and the Ottawa Regiment, first
of the TR/F 'warm-up' matches. Results lists are, or will be, posted on the DCRA
web site, so my comments will be brief. We do not yet have final scores for the
ISSF.
The 223/556 TR was won by Stan Frost, Saskatoon, with 355.33/375, narrowly
beating Al Katona, Surrey, BC, 351.25. Paul Reibin, Kamloops, BC, won the F
Class with 411/450.
Keith Cunningham, Burnt Rover, Ont., won the Long Range Challenge TR with
221.21/225, from Daniel Richardson, Channel Islands, 219.12. In F Class, John
Kajfes, Pickering, Ont., held on to defeat Leo D'Amour, Laval, Que., 249/270 to
247.
Finally, the list for the Ottawa Regiment shows a tie between Rupert Dix, GBRT,
and Jim Bullock, Mississauga, Ont, both with 75.7. Normally this match produces
a slew of 75s, but these were the only two in the blustery conditions. Two
members of the BMMP German Team headed the F Class, Rainer Berghus with 85/90
and our old friend Wolfgang Scholze with 82.
For me, this was a quite un-memorable day: got soaked twice, trigger full of
water and almost ceased to function, quite mediocre shooting, the awning over
our picnic table blew away, and there's been a long, quite tedious DCRA
Executive Meeting this evening. I've not even had anything worth mentioning
either to eat or to drink ... may tomorrow change all that!
