DCRA Championships Day 2
Fri 17 Aug 2007

WIND was the story of the day, at least in the afternoon. A cloudless sky lasted through the morning, but increasing cloud after lunch was an ominous sign of what was to come. A glance at the weather radar around 3 pm showed two centres of thunderstorm activity, one to the north of us and the other to the south. Fortunately, we were spared most of the rain until shooting was over, but the wind was quite something! More on that below.

We completed two matches today, in addition to the continuing Black Powder matches. No scores yet from the latter, which conclude with the International Teams Match in the morning.

From yesterday, Rupert Dix, GBRT, is now confirmed as the winner of the Ottawa Regiment (800 m). Yesterday's other tied scorer has now been put into his correct class.

This was David Calvert's day in the two TR/F events, the Gooderham and the Army & Navy Veterans. David won both of these with scores of 100.12 and 100.16 respectively. In the Gooderham,, 2nd place was taken by George Gilpin, Ireland, 100.11, and in the Army-Navy by Gerard de Costa, Litchfield, NH, USA, 100.11. In the F Class, there was also a double winner in that Wolfang Scholze won them both with 118 and 116 respectively.

The morning and early afternoon relays had relatively benign conditions with only a light wind. However, the approach of the afternoon tempest brought a vast change in conditions. Perhaps, I should quote my own experience at 900 metres: including shot 9 I had not dropped a point and had wind of somewhere between 2 and 5 left. Before my last shot in an increasing gale, my partner missed the target. I assumed he had been 'blown off' and added 6 more minutes of wind. Then my relief/chagrin/surprise (???) I was awarded a downwind outer, which needed yet another 5 minutes of wind - all in all at least a 12 minute change, to which I was not equal! I finished 47 with an outer at the end, a worst possible 47, I think! Someone owes me a drink on that!

The wind continued to howl. Colin Brown's tent was almost blown flat and we were wondering if it would go into orbit. However, the wind dropped and the tent raised itself as if nothing had happened - something my wife might feel tempted to preach a sermon on sometime!

Tomorrow is said to be much more calm - we shall see. The Grand Aggregate of the Canadian Championship starts in the afternoon. The Meet n' Greet Party and BBQ is on in the evening.
