DCRA Canadian Championships - final day - Sat 25 Aug 2007
This was the last day of the 125th Canadian Championships. And it was a pretty exciting one! Weather: after heavy rain overnight, we were threatened with showers all day and heavier rain this evening. The latter was correct, but we were extremely fortunate to escape the earlier showers. During and after the Prize Giving, there were again torrential downpours. For tomorrow we are warned to expect the same, so we hope for the best! The major result today is, of course, that of the Governor General�s Prize. Here, after a very tense battle, Thomas Whitaker, Yorba Linda, CA, emerged victorious with a score of 297.31, just 2 vee bulls ahead of Hendrik Jacobs of South Africa. Grand Aggregate winner Toby Raincock, GBRT, was 3rd at 296.36. And now, I must offer my apologies to my readers around the world. It�s been a very long day and I can no longer keep my eyes open. I will finish this in the morning. **Sunday morning. The World Championship Matches for Veterans, Under 25s and Under 21s are now underway. The weather forecast is much better, mostly sunny with only a small chance of showers. We should now be set fair until at least the middle of the week. Continuing the story of yesterday, the F Class Final was also shot in the afternoon, with Robert Bock narrowly edging out Wolfgang Scholze for the top award. The Governor General�s Final scores figure in a number of major aggregates, listed on this web site. Amongst the more important ones are: The Canadian Open TR Championship: 1. Toby Raincock 1073.122; 2. Thomas Whitaker 1067.123; 3. Hendrik Jacobs 1167.106. The Canadian TR Championship and Bisley Aggregate: 1. Keith Cunningham 968.91; 2. James Paton 966.89; 3. Ken Westling 961.81. The 21st Century Aggregate (the aggregate of everything): 1. Toby Raincock 1340.145; 2. Thomas Whitaker 1334.147; 3. Ross McQuillan 1331.138. There were also several teams matches fired on Saturday morning, most notably the Canada Match, teams of 8 firers, at 300-500-600 yards. This was a remarkably close affair, with everything resting on the 600 yard range. After 300 and 500, GB, Australia and Canada had each only dropped one point (out of 800). At 600, GB went �clean� to finish with 1199.183, a new match record. The US picked up at 600 to finish 2nd with 1196.143. Canada was 3rd with 1995.146, and Australia 4th 1191.178. All in all, this was a great match with 10 teams in all. Other team match results, for the Under 25s, Under 21s, Veterans, F Class, and Clubs will show elsewhere. General John de Chastelain was the guest of honour at the Prize Giving in the evening. This event was marked not only by the large number of awards, but also by a heavy thunderstorm, with rain drumming hard on and coming through the roof of the marquee! So this ends the 125th CFRC, and the first part of this year�s shooting extravaganza. Now we are into the ICFRA World Long Range Championships, about which I hope to have more to say over the next week.
