Sat 16 Aug 2008
For once, the weather experts got it right, even down to the early morning mist, which rendered the targets invisible first thing. The mist cleared by 8:30 AM, so the shooting started half an hour late. The rest of the day was mostly sunny, with an "interesting", typically Connaught, breeze, varying in both strength and direction. In the afternoon, a little right to mostly quite a bit left, with rapid changes, were what the shooters had to cope with.
Two matches were fired today, with the completion also of two events begun yesterday. The full lists of scores are posted, and may be accessed below.
In the morning was the Gooderham, 15 at 500 yards and 10 at 900 metres. In the TR Class, Serge Bissonnette, Almonte ON, scored the only double possible to win the match with 125.11. Geoff Woodman, New Harbour NL, and Pat Vamplew, Whitby ON, were close behind each with 124.14. In F Class, Marius de Champlain, Rimouski QC, scored 147 (ex 150), with Dave Rumbold, Ottawa ON, second on 144.
In the afternoon, there was the Army & Navy Veterans, 15 at 900 metres. Conditions were quite testing so that only three scores in the 70s were recorded in the TR Class. Paul Tremblay won with a fine 73,8, from Peter Church, Dearborn MI USA, 72.5, and Bob Pitcairn, Chilliwack BC, 70.2. Bruce Condie, Kincardine ON, scored 80 (ex 90) to win the F Class, with Dave Rumbold on 77.
The second day of the Long Range Challenge saw Geoff Woodman finishing first with 288.25 (ex 300), after firing four times at 900 metres. Scott Fulmer, Liverpool NY USA, was second with 279.13, and Emil Praslick III, Columbus GA USA, third on 277.20. Marius de Champlain won the F Class with 333 (ex 360), from Norm Barber, Caledon ON, 327, and Daren Stewart, St. Armand QC, 313.
Finally, with shooting at 800 and 900 metres, the 223/556 Championship was finished. Stan Frost won the TR with 432.45 and Paul Reibin the F Class with 477. It is interesting to note that Stan's F Class score (432 + 45 = 477) was equal to Paul's.
In the evening, there was the usual "Meet'n Greet" party. There being no BBQ this year, sandwiches were provided for the function, along with a cash bar. It was good for many of the competitors to meet in less fraught circumstances than on the range.
Finally, your faithful scribe has fired five ranges today, and then enjoyed a very fine rare steak, washed down with some quite palatable Portugese red wine. He is now ready to hit the hay!! Tomorrow's forecast looks pretty good, so that the start of the Grand Aggregate in the afternoon should be under good conditions.
