Fri 15 Aug 2008
For the last two or three years, this first day of the matches has been WET. For quite a while today, it seemed as if that sequence might be broken. Much of the day was partly cloudy, dry and with a light, variable wind.
However, by mid-afternoon, ominous dark clouds gathered to the south and to the west. We were able to complete the full afternoon schedule, but in the intermission before the start of the Ottawa Regiment, there were increasing growls of thunder, some flashes of lightning and by soon after 5 PM it was raining hard. The weather radar showed a band of such thundershowers moving in from the west, so the difficult decision was made to canel the evening shoot.
Inevitably, once the markers had been pulled out of the butts and the shooters dispersed, the rain ceased and we probably could have got through. However, with storms all around the call was indeed the correct and safe one. There is probably no time in the rest of the schedule to fire the Ottawa Regiment, although various options will be considered in the morning.
So what did happen earlier? In the morning, the Sierra 300 metre ISSF Canadian Championship was fired - 60 shots on the challenging ISSF target. In the preliminary list, Paul Tremblay, Quebec, scored 596 in the TR/ISSF Class, which Marius de Champlain, Rimouski QC, had a perfect 600 in F Class.
Also fired were the first four ranges of the 223/556 Championship (300, 500 and 600 yards, 800 metres). I don't have a full aggregate list, but a glance at the scores shows Stan Frost, Saskatoon SK, leading the TR Class with 295.32, and Paul Reibin, Kamloops BC, the F Class with 323.
Finally, the first half of the Long Range Challenge (900 metres) was completed. Geoff Woodman, New Harbour NF, leads in TR with 148.14; Marius de Champlain on 171 leads Norm Barber, Caledon ON, by three points.
The forecast for tomorrow is good - may the pundits be right for once.
