11:00 AM Sunday
The
America Match is underway under cloudy skies. Rain is forecast, but it has thus
far held off. There is a moderate breeze from the right – generally right
winds here are a sign of unsettled weather.
Unfortunately
there are no score boards on the range as yet, but the following is what I have
gleaned. After 300 yards in the TR Match, GB has dropped 1 point,
Canada and the USA have each dropped 8. No information from the F Class Teams.
11:40
AM. Still no rain, and still no F Class scores.
I’ll get the latter when the 800m starts this afternoon (1:00 PM). In the
TR, GB went clean at 600 yards, and have dropped just one point overall; Canada
dropped 1 at 600, 9 down overall; and the USA dropped 6, 14 down.
1:25
PM. A very light drizzle is falling, but I think we will miss the worst of the
weather, which is to the southwest of us. Teams are about to start firing at
800 metres. I have now extracted the F Class scores [everything, of course, is
subject to checking and verification at the end of the match]: after 600 yards,
USA down 13, Canada down 18, South Africa down 47.
3:05
PM. The 900m is about to start. Skies are still cloudy, but no rain! GB had
another excellent shoot at 800m, dropping only one point, but the USA were even
better, going “clean”. Standings: GB 2 down overall; Canada dropped
2, 11 down; USA dropped 0, 14 down. In F Class: USA dropped 10, 23 down; Canada
21, 39 down; South Africa 19, 66 down. Unfortunately, one of the major teams
has declined to keep a public scoreboard. This is a great shame, since it does
not allow the spectators and other teams to see what’s going on. My
personal view is that the keeping of scoreboards should be mandatory,
especially for the host country.
4:15
PM. The America Match is over. I do not yet have the F Class scores, but,
unofficially, the order is 1. USA, 2. Canada, 3. South Africa. In the TR, all teams dropped 9
points at the 900m range, so that standings were maintained: 1. GB 2389, 2.
Canada 2380, 3. USA 2377. It was a close and well fought match. GB really won
it at 300 yards, with the teams essentially level pegging from then on. There
will be award presentations in a little while.
6:45
PM. Presentations over, goodbyes said, “see you
next year here/there/anywhere”. The final scores were:
F
Class Teams (8 shooters, not more than 4 F(O)): 1. USA
2354.274; 2. Canada 2323.234; 3. South Africa 2286.192.
TR
Teams (8 shooters): 1. Great Britain 2389.315; 2. Canada 2380.289; 3. USA
2377.280.
Two
very good matches.
Congratulations to all.
I’ll
add a few reflections on this year’s matches in a day or so.
