Sun 20 Aug 2006
We did not entirely escape the rain today, although it could have been a great deal worse, judging by reports from other areas not too far from Ottawa. At the start of shooting, there was light rain which tapered off during the morning. There was occasional drizzle during the day, with a heavier period of precipitation for the last two relays of the afternoon.
However, no matches were delayed, and scoring remained very high.
In the morning, the firing of the Tilton at 300 metres and 600 yards saw the conclusion of the "warm-up" matches. First three places were taken by members of the Great Britain Team, Nigel Ball 100.18, Rick Shouler and David Calvert 100.17. There were 40 double possibles. In the F Class, there is a tie between John Brewer and Jim Murphy, both with perfect scores of 120.
The Tilton was the concluding part of the Champlain Aggregate, the total of the "warm-ups". Danny Coleman, GBRT, won this with 374.52/375, from Jon Underwood 374.50 and Alain Marion ,Hull, Quebec, 374.48. Jim Murphy won the F Class with 445/450, one point ahead of Larry Bartholome.
Also concluded with the Tilton was the "Early Short Course Aggregate", a selection of shoots over the first weekend for shooters who can't stay for the full aggregate. Robert Reil, Burlington, Vermont, won this with 653.43/700.
In the afternoon, the Macdonald Stewart Grand Aggregate got underway with the firing of the Macdougall at 300 metres and 500 yards. the Macdougall Trophy is the DCRA's oldest, dating back to 1868. Jon Underwood won this with 100.19, with only one shot out of the central vee bull, from David Dyson, GBRT, and James Paton, White Rock, BC, both on 100.16. Once again there were 40 double possibles. In F Class, there is a five-way tie at 119/120, involving Marius de Champlain, Quebec, John Brewer, Jim Murphy, Wolfgang Scholze, BDMP, Germany, and Jon Cowee, Cheyenne, Wyoming. That tie shoot could go on for quite a while!
And finally, the Steinhardt for Provincial Teams of six including at least three newer shooters was won by Ontario from BC and Quebec.
On Monday, we will fire the Norman Beckett at 300 and 800 metres, and the John Brick at 500 and 600 yards. The forecast is for warm and sunny weather, a little humid, but no rain.
And so to bed, the Milyaroo Merlot is beginning to take its toll.
