Canadian Championships, Day 5, Mon 20 Aug 2007

This was a fairly gentle day for shooting. A Hazy sun, with high overcast, no rain in spite of a storm moving along Lake Ontario, and never a very strong wind. Scores as a result were high.

The two matches fired were the Letson ( 7 shots at 300m-500 and 600y) and the Alexander of Tunis (10 at 900m). The Letson is the first part of the qualifying stage for the Governor Generals prize. In relatively mild conditions, with all 35s having triggers weighed, there were line-ups at the CROs tables in every relay. The list shows 105s down to 77th place, and 104s to 176th.

The Presidents match tomorrow will play the major role in sorting out who will advance to the Final on Saturday. The winner of the Letson receives a DCRA Life Membership and we have a three-way tie at 105.18 between David Luckman and Pareg Patel, GBRT, and Thomas Whitaker, Yorba Linda, CA, USA. The F Class HPS is 126 - Robert Bock, Brewster, NY, USA, and Marius de Champlain both had 125 and will also have to tie shoot.

The Alexander is so often the aggregate maker or breaker, but perhaps this was less true today in the more gentle conditions. Outright TR winner was Gillian Webb-Enslin from Australia with 50.8, followed by four scores of 50.7, and 42 50s in all. In F Class, Marius de Champlain continued his winning ways with 59/60, followed by Dave Rumbold with 58.

Todays aggregate was the Jack Gorrie, who developed so much of our computer scoring and squadding software. TR winner was David Luckman, GBRT, with 155.25/155.31. There were 16 scores of 155. In F Class, Marius de Champlain had 184/186, beating Robert Bock by 2 points. In the grand Aggregate, we now have 455 points on score, with 375 to go. Toby Raincock, GBRT, now leads with 454.54, from Sherri Hurd, USA, and Keith Cunningham, Ontario, both at 455.51. In F Class, Marius de Champlain has 531/546, with Robert Bock at 526 and Emil Praslick Sr at 522. The evening was cool and clear.

We grilled some excellent lamb chops, washed down with a bottle of Bourgogne Passetouraine and another of Tortoise Creek Cabernet merlot. All in all, Im feeling replete and fairly benign. The early start in the morning could be a struggle. Todays question is about a possible record: Ian Hogg had 7 hits recorded on the target at 900m, all of which were probably ricochets! He then got a miss and discovered the error of his ways. Let me know if you can beat this!
